Drug name: Bicillin-5

Active ingredients: benzathine benzylpenicillin and benzylpenicillin procaine

Pharmacological action:

Bicillin-5 is a penicillin beta-lactam antibiotic with a long-acting action. Like other penicillin antibiotics, Bicillin-5 works by inhibiting the synthesis of peptidoglycan causing suppression of bacterial cells wal synthesis. This is ultimately fatal for the microorganisms. Bicillin-5 is active against gram-negative and gram-positive microorganisms.

Bicillin-5 does not act on viruses, fungi, many of gram-negative microorganisms.

Clinical use:

Bicillin-5 is indicated in the following conditions:

Treatment of infectious diseases caused by susceptible to the drug bacteria including acute tonsillitis, wound infections, erysipelas, scarlet fever, leishmaniosis

All-year-round prophylaxis of rheumatism in adults and children.

Contraindications

Bicillin-5 is contraindicated for use in the following conditions:

  • Bronchial asthma
  • Hives
  • Hay faver
  • Reactions of hypersensitivity
  • PregnancyBicillin
  • Lactation period

Side effects

Bicillin-5 is generally well-tolerated. Possible side effects include: headache, increased body temperature, hay fever, arthralgia, angioedema. In very rare cases anaphylactic shock is possible.

Local reactions: painful sensation in the site of injection

Drug name: Bicillin-3

Active ingredient: benzathine benzylpenicillin, benzylpenicillin sodium + procaine benzylpenicillin

Pharmacological action:

Bicillin-3 is a combined antibacterial drug that belongs to a group of long-acting penicillins inactivated by penicillinase. Action mechanism of Bicillin-3 is associated with the suppression of peptidoglycan synthesis. Peptidoglycan is a cell wall mucopeptide. Suppression of mucopeptide synthesis leads to inhibiting of cellular wall synthesis in pathogenic microorganisms, suppression of their growth and multiplications.

Bicillin-3 is active against the following microorganisms:

Grampositive bacteria:  Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Bacillus anthracis, Gram-negative bacteria: Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Neisseria meningitidis, Actinomyces israelii.

Staphylococcus producing penicillinase is resistant to Bicillin 3.

Clinical use

Bicillin-3 is used for the treatment of infections caused by sensitive to the medication microorganisms. It is also prescribed for:

  • Syphilis
  • Frambesia
  • Streptococcal infections
  • Rheumatism prophylaxis
  • Leishmaniosis

Contraindications and cautions

Bicillin-3 is contraindicated for use in the following conditions:

  • Hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients
  • Bronchial asthma
  • Hay fever
  • Allergic reactions

Bicillin-3 is contraindicated for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding

Side effects

  • Bicillin-3 may cause the following side effects:
  • Allergic reactions: hives, angioedema, erythema, anaphylactic shock, hay fever, arthralgia
  • Digestive system: stomatitis, glossitis
  • Hemopoietic system: anemia, thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, hypocoagulation

Drug interactions

  • Chloramphenicol, or tetracycline antibiotics
  • Blood thinners (warfarin), heparin, or methotrexate because of a high risk of toxicity
  • Aminoglycosides, birth control pills or oral typhoid vaccine. Bicillin-3 decreases the effectiveness of the these drugs.
  • Live bacterial vaccines
  • NSAIDs
  • Uricosuric drugs such as probenecid
